  • Lomax gets 2019 British Rallycross season off to a Strong Start at Silverstone

Craig Lomax and his XtremeRX team headed to the season opener at Silverstone looking to get the 2019 campaign off to a good start.

The sun shone down on the Northampton circuit for the entire day, stark contrast to the artic conditions of a year ago. The Cobra Sport Exhaust backed driver recorded second fastest in class during free practice and went on to notch up a top three finish in Q1. However, in Q2 Lomax was forced to pull up after contact with another car during a racing incident caused damage to the steering.

The Liqui Moly backed driver then secured a solid fifth place while ensuring he kept out of trouble during the mele at turn one in Q3. This earned him a second-row grid spot for the first final of the year. After a great start Lomax found himself firmly in the leading pack in fifth spot at turn one, a position he held onto for the duration of the race in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive Supernational field for 2019.

The championship now moves to Lomax’s favourite circuit, Lydden Hill for its traditional Easter Monday fixture. Action gets underway at 09:00am.

    Craig Lomax, #24:

‘It was the first time we had driven the car with all the upgrades we made over the winter and it feels so good. It makes you wonder where we could have been if we hadn’t had the knock in Q2.

I must say the work that Cobra Exhausts and Steven (Gault) have done takes Sabrina to a whole new level. We have a lot more to give this year’

  • Tordoff tops the time sheets on official BTCC test day

Sam Tordoff - 2019 Kwik Fit BTCC Honda CivicCobra Sport AmD AutoAid/RCIB Insurance Racing drivers Rory Butcher and Sam Tordoff kicked off the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship campaign in fine style yesterday, with Sam topping the time sheets and setting a new lap record on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit layout during the official season launch test day (March 27).

Joining the 30-car BTCC line-up for the first time this year, Butcher and Tordoff set early benchmarks in the morning session with Sam leading the field and Rory only 0.146 seconds behind in P5 in the two Cobra Sport AmD AutoAid/RCIB Insurance Honda Civic Type Rs.

With lap times quickening in the afternoon session, Sam was the only driver to dip below the 48 second mark during his 170 laps, setting a new lap record of 47.927s on the 1.2mile Indy configuration.

“I’m really happy with how today went. It’s been a great day. We knew this car was good. We’ve been fast in testing all year, but it’s nice to come here in front of everyone else and assess where we really are on the grid.

“It’s the first time that I’ve been fastest in both the morning and afternoon sessions. It’s a good omen to start the season off. I’m very confident ahead of next week’s opening round. We have a good indication of where were going to be for the first race, and it’s very promising.

Looking ahead to next weekend’s opening rounds, Tordoff concluded; “I couldn’t have asked for anymore. Big thanks to the Cobra Sport AmD AutoAid/RCIB Insurance team. They’ve worked really hard this winter and we’re going to arrive with very different expectations of what’s possible.”

  • Available Now - VAG Group Resonator Delete Exhausts

The Mk7 / 7.5 VW Golf GTI, Mk7 Golf R and Audi S3 (8V) have all been back into the Cobra Sport development facility recently for a new product release which has been frequently requested by VW and Audi vehicle owners.

Designed and manufactured to uncompromising standard, Cobra Sport has re-defined the sound of the O/E exhaust systems through a resonator delete exhaust section. This simple upgrade significantly improves the sound and amplification of gear change characteristics.

The resonator delete pipe is manufactured with CNC mandrel bent T304 stainless steel pipework with a bore size of 2.75” (69.9mm). The new part removes the central silencer/resonator found in the O/E system allowing for smoother gas flow rates for improved power delivery and a noticeably enhanced exhaust tone. The new Cobra Sport Exhaust significantly improves the sound of the car, increasing in volume but more importantly producing a deeper better quality sporty sound.

Cobra Sport Sales Director Matt Thomas commented, “Our new resonator delete pipes are an excellent introduction to performance exhaust improvements. We find many customers start with a basic resonator delete upgrade but soon take this further, fitting a Cobra Sport cat back or full turbo back exhaust upgrade. The exhaust tone with the delete pipe fitted is noticeably louder, deeper and more aggressive giving the desirable performance exhaust characteristics of a sport exhaust upgrade, with crackles and pops significantly enhanced. We have a before and after video on our website which demonstrates the substantial tonal improvements with the new part fitted”.

As always Cobra Sport are willing to back up their promises on quality, with a lifetime guarantee for customers who purchase the exhaust upgrade. Usual refinements include hand finished advanced  TIG welding techniques, Grade 304 stainless steel pipework, formed expertly on CNC Mandrel bending machines and precision jig manufacturing to ensure a perfect first time direct fit.

  • Cobra Sport and Motorbase Performance racing ahead in the BTCC

Leading performance exhaust specialists, Cobra Sport, join forces with another front-running BTCC team for 2019.

Cobra Sport is proud to announce an exciting new technical partnership with Motorbase Performance for their 2019 BTCC campaign.

Two Shredded Wheat-liveried Ford Focus RS’ driven by Ollie Jackson and Tom Chilton along with a ROKiT sponsored Focus RS driven by Nicolas Hamilton will compete in ten rounds of this hotly contested Championship – with all cars now running specially developed Cobra Sport race exhaust systems.

With a proven track record at the highest levels of motorsport, Cobra Sport’s Motorsport Projects division was approached by Motorbase Performance to develop a bespoke exhaust system to meet the strict racing criteria.

Developed at their Sheffield-based technical facility, with the assistance of sister company JP Exhausts, the brief was to produce a full system that would maximise performance of the Focus RS, while withstanding the rigours of a season of intense BTCC competition. The end result is a triumph of automotive engineering.

Manufactured from ultra-resilient T304 stainless steel, the 3-inch mandrel-bent system has been precision TIG-welded to optimise gas flow and maximise strength. The profile of the exhaust’s side exit has been formed with additional strengthening to maintain ground clearance and withstand the rigours of the BTCC.

With free-flowing silencers tuned to meet strict 115dB race-day limits, this bespoke competition system showcases Cobra Sport’s expert craftsmanship and industry-leading TIG-welding solutions. It incorporates the same high levels of quality and attention to detail that you’ll find on every single TIG-welded road-car application.

Cobra Sport Exhausts look forward to building on this with Motorbase Performance in the 2019 BTCC.

The first round of the 2019 Championship takes place at Brands Hatch on 06-07th April, with nine more races to follow.

  • Available Now - BMW M2 (F87) Performance Exhausts

BMW M2 F87 Cobra Sport Performance ExhaustDelivering an even harder performance edge to BMW's brilliant F87 M2 is the new valved 3” (76.2mm) Cobra Sport performance exhaust.

Both Cobra Sport's Technical and R&D teams were involved in the planning and preparation that went into the product testing and development of this new exhaust system to ensure the correct balance between sound, aesthetics and power improvements.

The new Cobra Sport Exhausts for the M2 are based on 3” (76.2mm) diameter pipework for improved gas flow and to open up opportunities for performance tuning. The T304 stainless steel pipework is CNC mandrel bent and benefits from advanced manufacturing techniques and superior TIG welding procedures to produce a superlative finish.

By including the exhaust valve, the new Cobra Sport performance exhaust systems offer the best of both worlds continuing to utilise the built in BMW drive modes. With the valve closed the gasses are directed through the entirety of the optimised rear silencer ensuring a subtle but sporty exhaust tone suitable for everyday driving.

BMW M2 TIG Welded Cobra ExhaustIn sport mode the valve opens allowing gasses to flow through and exit both outlets of the silencer increasing flow rates and sound levels. The result in sport mode is a much deeper exhaust tone than standard which becomes highly aggressive when under full load with a trademark crackle on overrun, completely overhauling the driving experience.

The design of the back box was tweaked a number of times to ensure there was no resonance or exhaust drone with each layout being extensively road tested to find the optimal design. During the same process the exhaust sound was optimised with the final system adding a subtle +4dB on the track test whilst completely overhauling the tone upgrading the car to a truly stunning sound track.

Cobra Sport Sales Manager Matt Thomas commented, “The BMW M2 is a real enthusiasts car so we were keen to create a system which suits everyday and full track use. By incorporating the valve, we have been able to cater for both however having heard the exhaust in Sport+ mode that’s the mode we expect it to stay in permanently! Matched with the Cobra Sport Sports Catalyst or De-Cat downpipe to create a full turbo back exhaust upgrade, huge power increases are possible with a re-map at one of our tuning partners”.

The Cobra Sport’s quad exit exhaust system benefits from a choice of twin slashcut and angled 88.9mm tailpipes finished in either original highly polished stainless steel or upgraded to our Carbon Fibre tailpipe option.
