The Speedworks Motorsport Gazoo Racing Europe Toyota Supra enjoyed their first podium of the 2020 British GT Championship yesterday in only their second race weekend in the new Toyota Supra GT4 car.

Exceptional drives from Sam Smelt and Cobra Sport sponsored driver James Kell matched with faultless pit stops by the crew and 100% reliability kept the team at the sharp end of every session. The team qualified on the front row for both races before heading on to claim a 3rd place in race 1 and class podium in race 2.

Adverse weather conditions throughout the day meant for some challenging driving conditions and enforced the need for intelligent racing and correct tyre choices. Having secured a podium and silverware in the first race of the day, the team started race 2 on the wet tyres which allowed Sam Smelt to make up positions in a blistering first stint. The track began to dry mid race giving the cars starting on slicks the chance to make up ground. James Kell took over half way through with a change to slicks allowing him to gain ground on the GT4 class cars. Even with a treacherous last 10 minutes in the rain on slicks James brought the Supra home for a class podium and strong points on the board for the Speedworks Motorsport team.

The team now look forward to their next outing at Brands Hatch over the weekend of 29th and 30th August 2020.
