Exhaust Talk: Episode 01 | Resonated or Non-Resonated
Posted by Cobra Sport Admin
Introducing Cobra Sport's all-new educational show, Exhaust Talk. In this series we will be answering your questions on everything exhaust related from resonators, to sports catalysts, to what is a legal exhaust modification for your car.
Episode 01 covers one of the questions Cobra Sport most frequently gets asked, Resonated or Non-Resonated.
What are the differences between Cobra Sport's resonated and non-resonated performance exhausts?
Cobra Sport's resonated exhaust systems feature a silencer in the middle of the exhaust system, which softens the exhaust tone when compared with the non-resonated setup. This setup offers the perfect middle ground between the factory fit exhaust and the non-resonated Cobra Sport performance exhaust, allowing you to daily drive your car whilst offering added audible emotion.
Internally, the resonator features perforated tubing, to maximise the flow of exhaust gasses as well as wire wool and e-glass inside the resonator wall to soften the exhaust note.
The non-resonated performance exhaust setup is designed for the ultimate thrill seeker, offering drivers a more raw aggressive sound with added emotion and frequencies allowing you to truly stand out from the crowd.
Which is best for me?
This is all down to personal preference and how you drive your car. Head over to Cobra Sport's YouTube channel to listen to sound clips of your car with both exhaust setups, and use a pair of headphones or speakers to get a true feeling of the audible emotion offered by a Cobra Sport performance exhaust, in order to help you make your decision. Alternatively contact a member of the Cobra Sport team to discuss how you use your car and we will advise which setup will be best suited to you.
Why is the resonated exhaust performance exhaust more expensive than the non-resonated performance exhaust?
This is due to the cost of materials and labour required to manufacture a resonator. The resonated section requires extra labour in the manufacturing of extra stainless steel for the resonator wall which houses wire wool, e-glass and perforated tubing, unlike the non-resonated section which is simply straight stainless steel pipework.
Is there a difference in performance?
The simple answer is no, there is not a difference in performance between the resonated and non-resonated systems. As part of the extensive research and development process, every Cobra Sport exhaust is tested to ensure the optimum flow of exhaust gasses, ensuring that the performance of your car is enhanced by fitting a Cobra Sport exhaust. The biggest difference between the resonated and non-resonated exhausts is the silencing and the tone produced.
All Cobra Sport exhausts utilise precision TIG-welding techniques for exemplary fit and finish – a feature that gives Cobra Sport an advantage over other manufacturers. With over 25 years in the performance exhaust industry, each Cobra Sport exhaust system is designed, manufactured and tested in Sheffield, the heart of the UK steel industry.
